Inside Out

In which ways does a portrait reflect the person in the picture? – With a focus on the relationship between photographic portraiture and social constructions of “self”, Inside Out revolves around concepts of identity, visual representation, and the potential split between public image and self-image.
In a series of photographic (self-)portraits, the sitters are both subjects and co-authors. Before I photograph and select a portrait of each sitter, the sitter creates her own portrait with the help of a release cable, and thus decides on one image that, in her view, portrays her best. The final outcome is two photographs of the same person, and the results may differ or may be alike; however, they can never be the same.
One image is photographed and selected by the sitter; the other image is produced by the author/photographer.
